The Celtic Orthodox Church
The Celtic Orthodox Church
Is based in Brittany. We have several parishes in Europe, one parish in the British Isles, in Marshwood Dorset, Saint Gwenn's. www.stgwenns.org In addition to this we have a hermitage in Wales and a bishop and the foundation of a monastery this year in America. Historically we have a long tradition. To quote our late Metropolitan Mael His Beatitude Primate of Dol, "A long standing tradition held in truth, such a tradition is usually founded in truth".
So for us our original founding date goes back to the time of Saint Joseph of Arimathea and St Aristobulous circa AD 37-68. However from the council of Whitby AD 641 until AD 1204 . It was a turbulent time for Celtic Christianity and the people of the Church. A concept that is disputed by some scholars, who claim there was never a Celtic church. In the West the following concept is alien to many, the church building is not the Church. It is people who are the church. Therefor, in the understanding of the Orthodox traditions, the definition of church is in the congregation of people and not the buildings nor geographical locations. What is important to those who are Celts was and still is in their spirituality is an understanding which we recognizes through the natural order the creative majesty of God.
Our Orthodoxy is in accordance with ancient traditions of the early church that Christianised the known world at that time, including the Dark Isles as Britain was known as. Indeed somewhat earlier than the arrival from Rome of Augustin First bishop of Canterbury in fifth century.
Like all Orthodox faith's our foundation is reflected in prayer, fasting, the liturgy. By using the liturgical music, of the ancient Mozarabic Rite linking us to our ancient roots. This music is beauty of Orthodoxy in its liturgical music. Gregorian chant when sung in monastic setting resonates with the spirit. Mozarabic chants takes us back in time to before then.
As evident today these elements reflect and resonate with the modern society, the desire for peace of soul and spirit, It is evident today these elements reflect and resonate with the modern society the desire for peace of soul and spirit. poetry...
